Columbus Day

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Today is Columbus Day.  According to Wikipedia, the holiday was first celebrated at long ago, in 1792, in New York.  But it looks like the holiday didn’t really begin to take off until the 1850s and 1860s, when the Italian American community embraced it as a holiday celebrating their cultural heritage.  The government designated Columbus Day a national holiday in 1934.
